About Us

Story behind the brand:
I vividly remember travelling to the Caribbean as a teenager for my sister’s wedding. My Gosh life was sweet! back then… However I digress  I must have been about 16 at the time. After a long, eventful day, I went to take a shower, only to realize I’d forgotten my shower gel in the bedroom. There were lots of guests from all over the world, so naturally, everyone had brought their own shower bags. But this time, I had left mine behind.

As I scanned the bathroom, my eyes landed on a strikingly beautiful bar of soap a deep sapphire blue. It looked so unique and captivating that I thought, “Why not?” and decided to use it. Little did I know, this would be a memorable mistake (and anyone from the Caribbean is probably already having a laugh, while the rest of you are about to find out why!).

The soap lathered up wonderfully, with a fresh linen scent that made me feel as though I was bathing in clean, crisp air. The color was so mesmerizing, I found myself rolling it over my body gloves, enjoying the experience. I made sure not to use it directly on my intimate area because I knew better, but of course the soapy residue found its way there anyway as I rinsed off. Feeling clean and refreshed, I wrapped myself in a big fluffy towel and wandered back to the bedroom to finish my nighttime routine.

The next morning, I noticed I felt a bit moist down there. I brushed it off, thinking I’d simply sweated during the night. But by that evening, things didn’t feel quite right my intimate area was irritated, and it certainly didn’t smell like me. Puzzled, I told my mum I had a problem. She asked what I’d washed with, and I confidently told her the name of my usual products. But then, it hit me I hadn’t used them the night before. I sheepishly confessed that I had used the blue soap from the bathroom.

The look on my mum’s face was priceless blank at first, then followed by a burst of laughter. “You do realize that’s blue soap for washing clothes, don’t you?” she said. “It’s designed to make whites whiter than white, which is why it’s that brilliant shade of sapphire blue! No wonder you’re feeling off down there.”

The next day, we rushed to get some treatment one internal treatment and a cream. But it wasn’t enough. I eventually needed a course of antibiotics to fully recover from that little adventure.

Fast forward to my 40s, and I can laugh about it now, but that experience left a lasting impression. Since then, I’ve stayed far away from any soaps that aren’t pH-friendly. But, as many women know, even with the right products, things like intercourse, monthly cycles, and tight gym wear can lead to recurring issues like BV and thrush. I’ve had my fair share of both, and each time I found myself wanting a treatment that was quick, soothing, available without a prescription, and gentle on my intimate area. Even after my periods, I wanted a way to quickly feel internally fresher.

That’s when my journey began to create a range of intimate care products called Prettie Kittie designed for effective, gentle, and soothing care, because every woman deserves to feel confident and comfortable in her own skin.

Why representation and diversity is important:

Representation is incredibly important  and it’s at the heart of I want Prettie Kittie to stand for. Growing up, I remember looking at the world around me and wondering why I didn't see anyone who looked like me in advertising or on TV.

I recall my first glimpse of representation in the mid to late 80's, there was Grace Jones a stunning dark-skinned woman with a commanding presence, Iman and Naomi Campbell celestial supermodels. Floella Benjamin presenting children’s programs, and then Rusty Lee with her infectious laughter. I remember watching the news with my mum, seeing the well-spoken Moira Stewart and Trevor McDonald delivering the headlines. Then came the 90's, where I saw Lenny Henry, and shows like Desmond’s and The Real McCoy. But other than that, we were scarce in commercials until the 2000's, when Howard from Halifax became a familiar face.

Across the pond in the US, things were different, but here in the UK, representation was rare, and that absence subliminally weighed on me.
Another reason why representation is so close to my heart is because of my mother. She was a nurse, and in the later years of her career, she became a district nurse, often taking me along on her rounds. Through her, I was introduced to women who were amputees, blind, deaf, in wheelchairs, and more. I saw women who had been through so much, yet they weren’t reflected in the media I consumed. I got to witness their strength, beauty, and resilience firsthand something that TV never showed me.

As I grew older, I realised just how vital it is for all women to be seen, heard, and valued no matter their skin colour, ability, size, or background. I want Prettie Kittie to be a space where woman can feel seen, included, and celebrated for exactly who they are. Diversity isn't just a part of our brand, it's in our foundation.
